I first started traveling solo internationally long before my career as a professional travel writer began, back in college when protecting my belongings involved keeping a death grip on my airline tickets (remember cardstock tickets?) and cashier’s checks. I remember nervously walking around London — wearing my backpack in front, of course — and assuming everyone on the Tube was trying to figure out where I had stashed my cash. I learned from that trip that traveling in fear is no fun as a solo traveler (or as any sort of traveler, for that matter), and it’s definitely not necessary.
